Kajiado County is less than an hour’s drive from Nairobi city on a day when traffic is flowing fluidly.  The mention of Kajiado instantly brings three things to mind: rich indigenous Maasai Culture, barbecue and Ngong Hills.  Kajiado is the home of elephants of Amboseli where you get to see Kilimanjaro from Kenya.

Originally known as Olpurapurana, a place on raised ground, was named Kajiado, O’keju-ado, meaning the long river. The seasonal river runs from the East of Kajiado to the West.

Kajiado is the embodiment of scenic beauty, with a mixture of lush green and dessert aura. The Ma people add to the beauty of Kajiado with their originality and richness in culture. Below are the nine most amazing places and things to do when you go on a Kajiado Safari.

The Karen Blixen Museum

bilxen

Karen is the leafy getaway, an escape from the Buzz of the City. The Blixen Museum is a haven of coffee and serenity. It is home to rich Maasai artefacts and curio items. Generally, the Blixen Museum is not all historic but more artistic and beautiful.

People bring their family and loved ones here to relax and find inspiration. When you need to sneak away from the chaos of Nairobi city then the Karen Blixen Museum is your place to be. But this will not be great until you first visit….

The Amboseli National Park.

wildebeest

Imagine viewing The Kilimanjaro from Kenya. It is a Mysterious sight. Many artists have confessed that the scenery has spoken to the depths of their souls. Art inspired by these scenic views is usually profound – photography, written and drawn.

Amboseli is the home of large herds of elephants. It is expansive, a whole 392 Square Kilometres.  At the mouth of the Amboseli, you will be welcomed by a dry lake, which normally gives the most beautiful mirages. Have you chased a mirage in your life before? Here is a chance for you to try so.

The Amboseli is endowed with a plethora of fauna and flora. Over 200 bird species for bird watchers and the most luxurious camping sites. You will not only enjoy the game drives to sight the big five and the endangered species like the duiker, the rare antelopes, Black rhinos, hippos, wildebeests, and water buffalos.

The luxury lodges will give you world-class accommodation and cuisines, especially the barbecues and game meat.

Not mentioning the Rothschild giraffe of Amboseli is an injustice.  Come feed a giraffe, share a cup of coffee with one and kiss one if you don’t mind. You can send a poster home doing so.

Talking of cuisines, you have not visited Maasai Land, until you taste the traditionally roasted meat at …

Ole Polos Country Lounge

This is a place like no other. If you are looking for a ranch experience, then Ole Polos is your place to be. The barbecues here are my favourite. You will get to roast a goat and enjoy the juicy mutton, dripping from the grills, and soaked in local herbs.

The luxury mixed with culture in Ole Polos will blow your mind. You cannot be described in writing when you contact Come Travel Kenya Limited to plan your Kajiado Safari Itinerary, ask them to add Ole Polos to the plan.

Take a Hike of The Ngong Hills

Do you want a quiet spot where you can sit and get a beautiful view of Nairobi City? Ngong Hills beckons. It is time to boot up and take a hike up the Ngong hill. A family picnic up the hill is usually the best.

You can go for paragliding, ziplining, take a cultural tour meet the people and go on a nature trail. The Ngong is the best place to visit with kids. Carry sandwiches and let them run around in the grass.

Would love to see the extreme opposite of Ngong? Drive to Nyiri Dessert

Nyiri Dessert is hot and dry. You can come here to do self-attachment of sins and soul searching the old way. It’s also referred to as the Nyika or Taru. The Thorny trees are amazing in pictures and you will come across desert elephants, leopards and impalas. Where we have impalas, you will not miss a lion.

Is space and vastness that goes into nothingness your kind of drug? Let us plan a trip to the Nyiri Dessert.

Still on hikes – Ol Doinyo Orok

plateau

This is a 170 km drive from Nairobi, then you boot up to go up the Ol Doinyo Orok. This is a plateau but you have to climb before you get to the satisfying flat area. This a perfect place for Nature walks, bird watching, and game viewing.

The Selenkany Conservancy

This is a community initiative Conservancy. Visiting here is a splash into the depths of Maa Culture, and contributing to the good course of conserving the environment.

The conservancy sits on 15000 acres of land donated by the government to the nomadic people of Kajiado.

Here you will find all kinds of wildlife- elephants, rhinos, cheetahs and leopards. Still on Conservancies…

The Shompole Conservancy

valley

This is a conservancy set between Lake Magadi and Lake Natron. After visiting the Lakes, watching the massive migratory birds and marvelling at the Pink Lakes, you can take a cooling drive into the Shompole Conservancy.

You will enjoy a diverse birdlife, and wildlife, feed the giraffes, and meet the raging buffaloes, elephants and desert antelopes like the orynx and gerenuk.

Olorgesaille

Is for historians. This is a prehistoric site along Magadi Road, 70Kms from Nairobi. Come see the stone tool used by the early man, watch birds and be in touch with the historic origin of man.
